Guidelines for Footnote and Bibliography Entries for Articles
and Commentaries according to The SBL Handbook of Style (Peabody, Mass.:
Hendrickson, 1999).
(Consult
the Handbook for further details and examples.)
Article in a Theological
Dictionary
Footnotes referring to
articles in theological dictionaries should credit the author of the article
(rather than the editor of the dictionary) and refer to the title of the
specific article (rather than merely the title of the dictionary in which it is
found).
First footnote:
2 H. Beyer, “diakone,w,” TDNT 2:81–87.
3 K. Dahn, “o[ra,w,” NIDNTT 3:511–18.
Subsequent footnote:
4 Beyer, TDNT 2:87.
5 Dahn, NIDNTT 3:511.
Bibliography entry:
In the bibliography, it is
not necessary to cite each individual article from a theological
dictionary. One may cite the dictionary
in a more general fashion:
Brown, Colin, ed. New
International Dictionary of New Testament Theology. 4 vols.
Kittel, G., and G. Friedrich, eds. Theological Dictionary of the New Testament. Translated by G. W. Bromiley. 10
vols.
